Update 2016-01-28

Dear Friends and Family!

Things in our village are getting back to normal after the recent typhoon left a path of destruction behind.  We are thankful to the LORD that no lives were lost and that we were able to minister to our community…

After the typhoon, we distributed a Christmas gift basket, filled with rice and other items, to all the families in our village. As a result, some folks mentioned an interest in Bible study! Praise the LORD!  We are praying that we soon will start a new Bible study group!

We also distributed 266kg (590 pounds) of rice to the neighborhood south of us, to about 150 families.  Here also, folks mentioned an interest in Bible study and we are praying that the interest is real and the LORD will allow us to have a new study group there!

The translation team is working hard on the Gospel of John in the “Believer’s Bible Commentary” and we just recently conducted a “Community Readability Check” here in Romblon.  We had good and valuable feedback and the project was well received within our community.  This is part of our “Quality Assurance” effort, to ensure that the translation can be comprehended by multiple population groups, like youth and rural folks.  The team is in desperate need of more translators, so please pray that the LORD will provide!

We are finalizing our schedule for our 3 month Furlough to the US, starting the first week in April, and many details have to come about soon.  Please pray!

Finally, we are scheduled to sail to  Manila Feb. 5th and to stay for about a week.  We are in need of supplies, but also we need to accomplish some tasks with the Immigration office. Please pray for safety, but also for strength, as the usual boat that went directly to Manila has been discontinued.  We arrive in Batangas and have to take a 3h bus to Manila, which is very rough…

Please continue to pray for:

⚑ New possible Bible studies

⚑ Current Bible studies

⚑ Translation of William MacDonald’s “Believer’s Bible Commentary”

⚑ More translators

⚑ Furlough details to come about

⚑ Travel to Manila February 5th

Thank you for praying with us and for us!

In Him,

Typhoon Update: Dec. 18, 2015

Hi All!

Again, we are OK!  Thank you LORD!

And, thank you(!) for praying with us and for us!

Yesterday, it finally stopped raining and we visited with some of the folks in our village. There is a need for rice and building material, but it is hard to tell how much of what is truly required.

Patrick will try to meet with the barangay captain (village official), Jun Hilario, to do further assessment.  Of all people, Jun’s house was totally destroyed and needs to rebuild from ground up!

Power was restored yesterday afternoon, as well as our internet that same evening! Praise the LORD!  We are expecting short, intermittent outages due to ongoing repairs…

Also, our well pump is pumping water as I write this! Praise the LORD!

Yesterday, 1 of the 2 ATMs was online long enough, so we were able to withdraw much needed funds! Praise the LORD! …Karen is in town right now, buying needed groceries & supplies…

The LORD answers prayers!  Praise Him!

In closing, please continue to pray for how we can help our neighbors in need…we need much wisdom in this regards, because of the cultural expectations (jealousy, corruption, etc.)…

Thanks for praying with us and for us!

In HIM!

Typhoon Update! Dec. 16th, 2015

Dear Friends and Family!

On December 16th, 2015, Typhoon “Melor” (aka. “Nona”) came right on top of us (Tuesday) at 3 am, with 120 mph winds and left a huge path of destruction behind.

We are ok, praise the LORD!

Our village was severely damaged, but no lives were lost! Many of the houses have been destroyed and need to be rebuild from ground up…

We lost power Monday evening around 10pm and it probably will be out for few days… Many crews of men are clearing downed trees and debris from the electrical lines…please pray!

We get our drinking water form a shallow well across the street, but without power we can not pump it to our house and filter it…also, we do not know at this time if the water- or power lines, coming fro-&-to the well, are ok or damaged…Please pray!

We are running a small generator for 4-5 hours a day, to keep our fridge cold, but are low on fuel… ATMs are off line and we do not have access to funds at this moment to buy groceries and needed fuel for the generator (our pantry is stocked well, though… Please pray!

Our internet connection is slow or not working at all, so we might not be able to send any updates for some time…but we will keep trying…

Also, please pray for how we can help our neighbors in need, in a God honoring way. We need much wisdom in this regards, because of the cultural expectations (jealousy, corruption, etc.)…

Please continue to pray for us!

Prayer Request 15-11-13

Dear Friends and Family!

We are thankful to be home after being stranded in Manila for 4 weeks, and, thank you so much for praying for this!

We are gearing up to give out food packages to about 20 families in our village around the 10th of December and the LORD graciously provided funds for it.  Praise Him!  We are so thankful to the LORD that He is allowing us to minister the folks here in Calabogo!

Also, the LORD added another lady, Reza, to our Bible study group this week and the LORD provided funds to buy more Bibles!  Praise Him!

In addition, please pray for Jennie, Denia and Barbara.  Jennie is British, Denja is a Filipina from Italy, and Barbara is Australian.  Karen spends time with all of them on-and-off, and Jennie comes to our Sunday Bible School and claims to know the Lord, but her life tells a different story.  We are praying for a one-on-one Bible study with each of them.  Pray for this and mainly, pray for their salvation!

The translation team is working their way through the Gospel of John and Patrick is working intensely on the mobile platform module creation, despite his low energy levels.  Also, the team is planning to release a “community check” version of John Chapter 1, on the mobile platform and also as a spiral bound edition, to key people in our communities.  We hope and pray for good and constructive feedback, and also new opportunities for Bible studies through this effort.

We are praying for more Filipinos to help us translate Bill’s Commentary in to Tagalog, for it is a big job.  Please pray with us for this matter!

Please continue to pray for:

    • the weekly Bible studies
    • the LORD to add more folks to the Bible study groups
    • a one-on-one Bible study with Jennie, Denia and Barbara
    • the purchase of more Tagalog Bibles (“Ang  Biblia 2001 Edysion”)
    • the translation work of the Believer’s Bible Commentary
    • the LORD to provide more Filipino translators
    • the upcoming food distribution to our village Dec. 10th
    • the vandalism to our water line to stop (occurred twice since we got back)

Thanks for praying with us and for us!

In Him!

Stranded! Prayer Req. 15-10-20

Dear Friends and Family!

Wow!  First a Category 4 Typhoon hitting the central and northern parts of the Philippines, shortly before we were planned to sail back to Romblon Island, and then, yesterday, a 5.8 earthquake in Batangas, where our departure port is located!

We asked the LORD to confirm that we should NOT go this afternoon, and, overwhelmingly, He confirmed for us NOT to go to Batangas today!  Thank you LORD!

Please pray that it will be possible for us to get on the boat from MANILA Bay (NOT Batangas!) on this coming Monday (27th)!  There had been some problem with that boat recently, but they replaced it with a different one…

And, please pray for safe travel back to Romblon Island, LORD willing, next Monday!

Thanks for praying with us and for us!

In Him!

Prayer Request 15-09-15

Dear Friends and Family!

It has been unusually hot for this time of year.  We are now in the so-called “Rainy Reason”, but without much rain.  Rain would certainly cool things down.  Our well is still giving us water, though, praise the LORD!

The weekly Bible study with the ladies is going well and Karen enjoys the time with the ladies very much.

The translation of Bill’s MacDonald’s Believer’s Bible Commentary in to the filipino language is going well, and the team almost completed the “Introduction to the NT”, “Introduction to the Gospels”, and the “Introduction to the Gospel of John”.  Once everything passes the proof-reading and all the checks, it will be distributed to key people for the “Community Check” (aka. “readability check”).  This step will insure that the translation is clear and understandable to young people and also people in the provincial areas.

We are planning to attend the annual CMML retreat in Laguna Rizal, to meet up with all the other Philippine missionaries, October 12.   Dave Johnson will be the speaker and we are looking forwards to a time of fellowship and spiritual renewal!  Traveling will be a little harder than usual, due to that our regular boat is in the dry dock for repair.  We have to sail to Batangas (instead to Manila Bay) and then get on to a 2-3h bus.

Also, we are planning our first furlough for next Spring (2016), but we do not have exact dates as of now…

Please continue to pray for the following:

⚑ Weekly Bible study

⚑ Translation work

⚑ Rain

⚑ Save travel to CMPI Retreat

⚑ Patrick’s health

⚑ Furlough Spring 2016

Thanks for praying with us and for us!

BBC Translation Update 15-09-02

Dear Friends and Family!

How exciting!

The LORD allowed us to add two more members to the BBC translation team!

Praise HIM!

One is Carmina (Mec) Villanueva and she is  from the Amadeo assembly and is a professional teacher.  She is an education (magna cum laude!) major graduate from PCU (Philippine Christian University) and has a master’s degree in the Filipino language.  She is disabled and only can work from home, and we are so thankful to the LORD that she is now full time with our team!  Please pray for Mec!

The second person is Gian-Carlo Soliman.  Carlo is a commended Gospel worker from the GMA assembly and is helping the team on a part time basis.  As of now, he still has to do “tent making” until the LORD allows him to join the team full time.  Please pray for Carlo!

This translation of Bill MacDonald’s Believer’s Bible Commentary (BBC) is so needed and necessary, especially since there is NONE (No, not one!) available in the filipino language (Tagalog)!  We are translating this particular commentary, because it is easy to understand and the theology is sound.  It will be most valuable for new believers and mature ones alike.

Thanks for praying with us and for us!

In Him!

Baby rescued! 15-08-23

Dear Friends & Family,

Finally, 11 month old Baby James, who was held for ransom by his former nanny for over 6 month, was released in to his uncle’s custody last week.  Praise the LORD!

This came about after Karen “negotiated” for over 7 hours, with much love, but also with very much persistence, appealing to over 12 people residing with the nanny in the swatter area in Cainta Floodway.

Baby James is the surviving twin of Lola Edith’s daughter, who past away about 6 month ago, in a very mysterious way.  Lola Edith is one of the ladies who attends our weekly Bible study…

Please continue to pray for Baby James!

Translation Work Update 15-08-15

Dear Friends & Family,

We just got back from a 10 day visit to San Juan, Manila.

We attended a week long training session with the translation people of BSA (ECS).  It was a wonderful time of fellowship with Dinna & Rikki Tienzo, Darben DelaCruz, Maila Agunda (instructor), and yes, we learned a great deal about the art and science of translation (thank you, Maila!).

Our team is greatly encouraged by the training and eager to continue with the “big job” of translating Bill MacDonald’s “Believer’s Bible Commentary” into Tagalog (Filipino).  The team is committed to translate the English into easy, every-day Tagalog, and to keep true to what Bill said & wrote.

☛ Indeed, a big job!  Please pray for the team!

We started the translation of the commentary on the Gospel of John and we are trying to find more people to help us to  translate Bill’s Commentary on the OT, starting with Genesis.

☛ Please pray that the LORD will provide!

Thanks for praying!

In Him!
