Thanks for Praying! Update 08/30/2013

Thanks for praying for us and the Philippines!

The water is all gone, praise the Lord!

Continue to pray for those who are still out of their homes…

We are planning to go back to Romblon Island the second week in September.

Our hope and prayer is that we will be able to get the electricity connected to the rental house.

There is much more work to be done after that, though…install pump to get water from well to the house, most window glas is broken, all locks are rusted, all of the faucets probably do not work, and much, much more…

Please pray for good weather, safety, energy and many opportunities to share the Gospel!

As with every day, we thank the Lord for His provision in ALL things…

Ps 23:1 “The Lord is my Shepherd (Jehova Raah’), I shall not want. (Jehova Jireh’)”

Urgent Prayer Request! 08/30/2013

Please pray for us and the Philippines!

The Metro Manila area suffered much devastation
due to heavy rainfall during the last few days.

Parts of San Juan City, just north of us, are under water!

Many lives are in danger!

We are OK…praise the LORD!

…thus far, the water is running off nicely here at the compound…

Update 05/08/2013

Dear friends and family!

Here is an update with thanksgivings and prayer requests.

[-] Our trip to Romblon Island:

We made it back to Manila, tired, but in good health and very joyful!
The Lord gave much opportunity to witness to folks while on the boat going to the island: Karen shared the Lord with Barbara Shepherd from Australia, who lives on Romblon.  Patrick spoke with a German couple and had a few hours of conversation about the Lord  with a gentleman from Germany named Volker (…we didn’t get much sleep, as you can imagine!).

We managed to visit with Barbara Shepherd and her husband Dennis a couple of times, while on the island, and they were of great help to us in giving us the lay of the island and with the search for rental apartments.

We had a wonderful time with Lani Mangaring and her kids, Mary Cris, Anthony and Tamara. (Lani is a widow whose husband passed away in 2008, she assisted Karen from 1990-1995).  Anthony graduated top of his class and was awarded 17 Gold medals!  Lani is a wonderful and godly friend and she took good care of us while on Romblon.  She also assisted us in searching for rental properties. She found 3 rentals for us,  whereby 2 of them fell through due to misc. reasons. (It seems rents can triple if you are a foreigner, so we are learning to have Lani help in the negotiations…).  We are still in contact with the owner of the 3rd rental property.  Incidentally, when we visited this place, a bunch of kids gathered all around on the front porch.  We could see right away many possibilities for a kids club there!!

We also met with Phyllis Rapha, a missionary with SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics/ Wycliffe) from Singapore. She has been working on the island for a few years doing translation of the New Testament into the island dialect. She gave us many helpful tips in regards to the Gospel work and the people on Romblon. She told us also some exciting news about the New Testament in Romblomanon: it is almost done and in the final stages of publication! There are several groups that are using the new Romblomanon Gospel of Luke for Bible study, with very good results. There was even a baptism of several as a result of these studies.

We are excited to see what God will do!

[-] Baquio City:

we had a short, but wonderful time with Ken & Joyce Hardisty. The Sunday we where there was busy with visiting the “Baguio Gold” assembly for the Lord’s Supper & preaching, and then the “Navy Base” assembly for the Bible Hour and fellowship.

[-] Language Study:

Karen is now meeting weekly with her tutor. Patrick is studying with several Computer resources and books. We purchased the Romblomanon Dictionary, published by SIL/ Wycliffe. Patrick is also refreshing his German, especially in regards to the Holy Scriptures and the Gospel verses.

Thanksgiving to the Lord:

[-] for Karen’s speedy recovery from surgery

[-] that Aunt Rose Brooks is doing very well and is back in fellowship at San Juan Gospel Chapel

[-] that BSA (Bible School of the Air) has received some funds and was able to build the first floor of their new facility. We hope to use their Filipino ECS courses in the work on Romblon Island!

[-] for allowing us to enjoy the loving fellowship at San Juan Gospel Chapel

[-] for showing us the possibilities on Romblon Island in regards to the Gospel and some places we might live.

[-] for safety while traveling many miles last month.

[-] for Lani Mangaring and her family for taking care of us.

[-] for providing ALL of our needs! Yes, Praise the Lord!

Prayer Requests:

[-] for the Lord to show us the right rental property to live and exactly where we should minister. And if the 3rd rental property is the one, please Lord, guide us and give us wisdom in the negotiations. We are meeting with the owner this Friday here in Manila!

[-] for the Lord to provide a small motorbike for Lani, to save the cost of public transportation (which eats up all her profit). Because she is a widow, we are trying to encourage her in her baking business…she bakes and sells her goods to merchants in the town.

[-] smooth transition to the island, probably starting in November.

[-] concentration, energy and discipline for the language study.

[-] Philippine driver’s licenses for both of us.

[-] Patrick’s passport renewal, incl. no problems with the transfer of the Philippine visa.

We need your prayers!

Thanks for laboring with us in this regard!

We think of you often and miss you all!

Ps 34:8 & 9

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him.

O fear the LORD, all of you his saints: for there is no lack to them that fear him.

[-] Language Study is still ongoing
, yes, slow, but steady.

  • We will be meeting with our tutor once a week very soon, Lord willing.

on their unfinished building. Praise the LORD!

[-] Patrick enjoyed a week of Special Studies
at the Bible Camp in Malolos.

The audience consisted of about 72 national full-time workers and some of them traveled as far as from Illoillo City and Cebu Island, which is about a 2-3 day travel. All enjoyed a wonderful fellowship after each session!

Update 11/04/2012

Greetings from Manila!

Here are some updates:

– we are still working on the apartment to get it cozy, and we purchased our first piece of furniture! The Lord is good!

– we visited the Hillcrest Gospel assembly 2 Sundays ago and had a wonderful time there, despite that is a Tagalog (Filipino) only speaking assembly…They have many young people in their meeting and they just concluded a youth conference…Over 200 attended, all from the surrounding assemblies. The elders are Ed and Melvin, whereby Ed lives with his family, his wife Joy and their 2 teenage daughters, here on the compound with us. Melvin works at SIL (aka. Wycliff ) and he said he will get us in contact with the translators of the”Romblonian” Bible. It is incredible how the Lord works these things out!

Hillcrest Chapel
Hillcrest Chapel

– last Sunday we visited the San Juan Gospel chapel again and brother Ronald was the speaker. This assembly is dual language and we enjoyed a wonderful B&B worship service. The folks there are very warm and welcoming.

– over the last 2 days, Patrick helped again with the “Exegesis” translation and this time with a booklet called “The Mass: from Mystery to Meaning”, published by Everyday Publications. An excellent booklet on apologetics in regards to the Roman Catholic Church doctrine and practices. The target group are the RCs, which, as you probably know, are many here in the Philippines. Please continue to pray for this effort.

– we signed up for DSL and it is unclear how long it will take to get it…please pray that it will be soon! We are connecting to the internet via a mobile pocket device and it is very slow and unreliable…

– we were unable to met with language tutor, but our office is all set up and we will start self-study Monday of next week. Please pray that we will learn the language fast…

– continue to pray for our visa. Today Patrick had to go to several different municipal locations to get a tax certificate and a barangay (neighborhood) clearance and it took him almost a half of a day to do it all…there is still more ahead of us…

– last week we witnessed to a Filipino college professor. His name is Rom-Vic and he asked us to pray for him and his parents to get along better. He is a very intelligent man in his mid 40s and spoke very good English. He seemed to be confused about God and RC church. He said he wanted to meet with us again and that he would contact us via email to set something up. Please pray for Rom-Vic, especially that the Lord will show him the Truth of His Word.

That’s all for right now…

Update from Manila 10/24/2012

Greetings from warm and humid Manila!

We have been here now for 2 weeks and would like to update you on what has happened thus far.

We arrived safe and sound in Manila on Oct 9th, about noon, and got to our apartment that was full of our boxes!

Praise the LORD!

SAM_0346

Our friend Lani Mangaring was anxious to see us and came all the way from Romblon Island by boat.  She has been helping us with unpacking and organizing.  This has been a challenge, since we do not have any furniture, yet. Lani has been a great blessing to us!  She is such a hard worker and has such a wonderful servant’s heart.  Keep in mind, that life here moves much slower and accomplishing common tasks takes much longer.   For example: purchasing some cheap cell phone’s took almost a whole day.  Buying groceries takes about a half of a day.  We always have to take public transportation and the traffic is also very slow moving.

The first week,  Patrick was asked to help with a translation task, so he met with Maila, a lady who comes to the office every other week .  Patrick’s job was to explain the English meaning of Scripture, Commentaries and other selected text to Maila, who then translated it in to the Filipino language. Patrick enjoyed this task very much!

The first Sunday here, we visited the San Juan Gospel Chapel, and we had a blessed time of worship & fellowship with the saints there!   Of all things, the first hymn was one of our favorites:  “Man of Sorrows”!   This certainly warmed our hearts!   The meeting was a mix of English and Tagalog, so we could understand most of it.

The second Sunday we visited the Berean Gospel Church in Quezon City, where Karen went when she was a single missionary, back in 1990-95.  Sadly, since then they have hired a pastor, probably due to the lack of male attendance, and therefore the lack of male leadership (which is a common problem here in the Philippines!).   Patrick was asked to share God’s Word and he spoke on Eph 1:7 “In Him we have the redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sin…”.   There are many young people in attendance and we certainly enjoyed our time there.

Also, next Tuesday we have an appointment with a language tutor to find out more details and options, and we would like to ask for your prayers in this regard.

Lastly, just today, we received our second shipment, undamaged and complete!

Praise the Lord!

We both feel wonderfully blessed by our God and Savior!
